The Fiji Association of the Deaf representatives,

Fiji Sign Language Team, and

My FEO Family.

‘Ara na Yadra’ and a Victorious afternoon to you all!

I am delighted to address you all on this significant occasion, as we celebrate the achievements of 15 Fijian Elections Office staff who have successfully completed their Certificate in Basic Sign Language.

Today, we recognize not just their hard work and commitment but also the vital steps they have taken toward making our electoral process more inclusive and accessible.

The 32 hours of training over the past eight weeks are a testament to the dedication of these individuals and their willingness to embrace new skills. The Basic Sign Language Course, conducted in collaboration with the Fiji Association of the Deaf, represents a meaningful stride in fulfilling one of the key guiding principles of the FEO’s 2024–2027 Strategic Plan which is ensuring inclusivity in the electoral process.

Inclusivity is not just a goal but a responsibility. As administrators of elections, we must ensure that every Fijian, regardless of their abilities, can fully and meaningfully participate in the democratic process. Learning Basic Sign Language equips our team with the tools to break down communication barriers, fostering a more equitable and supportive environment for members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

To our graduates, your achievement today is a proud milestone—not only for yourselves but also for the Fijian Elections Office. The knowledge and skills you have acquired will make a tangible difference in how we serve our voters and stakeholders. By learning to communicate in sign language, you are contributing to a culture of inclusion, respect, and the values that are foundational to a vibrant democracy.

I am particularly encouraged by the enthusiasm shown for this initiative. Today’s graduation is just the beginning. The FEO is committed to expanding this program as part of the EDAWG 4-Year Work Plan. We aim to train more staff in Basic Sign Language and continue enhancing our ability to support voters from all walks of life. This aligns with our broader mission of ensuring that no one is left behind in the democratic process.

I also take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Fiji Association of the Deaf for their invaluable partnership in this initiative. Your expertise, patience, and dedication have been instrumental in guiding our staff through this journey. Together, we are paving the way for a more inclusive electoral system.

To our graduates, I encourage you to continue practicing and using the skills you have gained. Whether assisting a voter on election day, engaging with stakeholders, or even in your daily interactions, your ability to communicate in sign language will serve as a bridge of understanding and inclusion.

In closing, let us remember that inclusivity is not a one-time achievement but a continuous effort. By investing in skills like these, we reaffirm our commitment to a democratic process that is accessible to all Fijians.

Congratulations once again to our graduates on this significant achievement. Your hard work and dedication inspire us all to strive for greater inclusivity and equity in our work.

With those words, I wish you all continued success in your journey. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your families. Thank You, Vinaka Vakalevu.
