Media representatives;
The IFES Country Director Pacific Ms. Pascaline Krone;
IFES Staff; and
FEO Colleagues.
‘Ara na yadra and Victorious Morning to you all.
I am delighted to welcome you all to this important workshop and your presence here today stresses the vital role that the media plays in the democratic process, particularly during elections.
Your role as members of the media in the electoral process is critical, and this workshop aims to enhance your capacity to cover elections effectively and responsibly.
As we all know, the media serves as the watchdog, informer, and educator of society. Therefore, through your work, you have the power to shape public opinion, ensure transparency, and hold those in power accountable. Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of democracy, and the media’s role in promoting these principles is indispensable. Your reporting can help ensure that elections are conducted transparently and that the electorate is well-informed.
In this workshop, you will cover a range of topics designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary for comprehensive electoral coverage. These topics include the fundamental principles and processes involved in voting and elections, what constitutes free and fair elections, and how the media can promote these ideals.
In addition, you will also address the significant threats posed by misinformation, disinformation, mal-information, and hate speech, and discuss how to identify and combat these information disorders to maintain the credibility of the electoral process.
A thorough understanding of the electoral cycle is essential for accurate reporting. From pre-election activities to post-election processes, we will explore each phase in detail. We will also conduct a practical session on the mechanics of voting, ensuring you understand the procedures and can report accurately on election day activities.
Understanding the complexities of seat allocation is crucial for post-election reporting. We will break down the methods used and how results are tabulated. This comprehensive approach will ensure that you are well-prepared to report on every aspect of the electoral process accurately and effectively.
At this juncture, I extend my gratitude to the IFES for their invaluable partnership in organizing this workshop. Together, we are committed to strengthening democracy in Fiji through informed and responsible media coverage.
I also thank all media representatives present this morning. As the Supervisor of Elections, I reaffirm our commitment to cooperation and trust with the media industry. You are the bridge between the electoral process and the public, providing essential information that helps voters make informed decisions.
We will continue to support you in this mission by being open, transparent, and responsive. I believe that together, we can ensure that the electoral process is transparent, fair, and trusted by all.
In conclusion, I encourage you all to engage actively in these sessions, ask questions, and share your experiences. The knowledge you gain here will not only enhance your professional capabilities but also contribute to the integrity and transparency of the electoral process in Fiji.
With these words, it gives me great pleasure to declare the IFES Media Workshop open, and may the LORD bless you and keep you, may HIS face shine upon you and give you peace.
Thank You, Vinaka vakalevu.
