Youth representatives;
IFES Officials; and
FEO Colleagues.
‘Ara Na Yadra and a Victorious Morning to you all,
I am delighted to stand before you today as we embark on this pivotal workshop, “Introduction to Elections.” This is not just a workshop, it is an opportunity—an opportunity for you, the youth, to shape the future of our nation.
Recently, I had the privilege of opening similar workshops in Lautoka and Suva, where dozens of young individuals, just like you, came together to engage with the democratic process. Their enthusiasm and fresh perspectives were nothing short of inspiring. It is clear that while your generation views elections differently from the older one, your ideas are rich with innovation and creativity. You are the future, and it’s your ideas that will drive us forward.
Over the next three days, we aim to empower you with the knowledge and skills to be active participants in our electoral process. This workshop, held in collaboration with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems or IFES, is more than just a learning experience; it is a crucial step in building a culture of informed, engaged, and responsible voters in Fiji.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to the organizations that have brought us together today. The National Youth Council of Fiji, Fiji Council of Social Services, Fiji National University Student Association, University of the South Pacific Student Association, Sanatan Fiji, and Soqosoqo Vakamarama I-Taukei have all played a vital role in identifying the passionate and promising young leaders we have here. Your support is invaluable in making this initiative a reality.
This workshop is perfectly aligned with the Fijian Elections Office’s 2024-2027 Strategic Plan, specifically Pillar 3, which emphasizes Institutional Strengthening. Additionally, Measurable Objective 3.8.3 highlights the importance of providing regular workshops to develop our capacity. Today’s workshop is a testament to our commitment to these goals, and, more importantly, to you—the future leaders of Fiji.
As you might know, youth represent a significant portion of our National Register of Voters. Your participation in the electoral process is not just important—it is essential. Understanding the electoral system is not just about casting a vote; it is about becoming advocates for free and fair elections, ensuring that every voice is heard and every vote counts.
Our objectives over the next three days are clear. They are to:
- Equip you with the knowledge and skills to make meaningful contributions to our electoral processes.
- Empower you to work collaboratively with the FEO during elections.
- Build trust and foster a strong network among you, the youth, who will lead us into the future.
The workshop agenda is rich and comprehensive. Today, you will dive into topics like Voting & Elections, Free & Fair Elections, and the Electoral Process in Fiji.
Tomorrow, you will tackle issues of equality, the rights of marginalized voters, and how we can make elections more inclusive.
On the final day, you will address the critical challenges of information disorders, combating misinformation, and promoting ethical digital communication.
I therefore urge each of you to actively participate, share your thoughts, and soak up every bit of knowledge. Our democracy thrives when its citizens, particularly the youth, are engaged, informed, and committed to the principles of justice and fairness. Your voice has the power to shape the policies and decisions that will define our nation’s future.
Let us also extend our thanks to IFES for their partnership, to our collaborating organizations for their dedication, and to all of you for your commitment. Together, we can build a brighter, more inclusive, and democratic Fiji.
With those words, I now declare this “Introduction to Elections for Youths” workshop officially open. May the LORD continue to bless you and keep you. May HIS face shine upon you and be gracious to you and may he give you peace.
Thank You, Vinaka Vakalevu.
