The Fijian Elections Office (FEO), today launched the Civic Education Curriculum Resource for Years 9 and 10, marking a significant step in strengthening civic awareness among young people across Fiji.
In her remarks before handing over the curriculum to the Ministry of Education, the Supervisor of Elections Ms Ana Mataiciwa said the initiative began in 2018 with a vision to make civic education more meaningful and accessible for students nationwide.
“This journey started with a simple idea, to make civic education more engaging and relevant for young people across Fiji. What followed was a strong collaborative approach to developing materials that truly meet the needs of our schools,” said Ms Mataiciwa.
She highlighted that the resources were designed with practical classroom realities in mind.
“Each component has been designed with practicality and accessibility in mind. We recognise that not all schools operate under the same conditions. Access to printing and teaching resources varies, this is why durability, usability, and adaptability were considered,” said Ms Mataiciwa.
Ms Mataiciwa added that while the FEO led the development and testing of the resources, the Ministry of Education will now oversee their rollout and long-term integration into the school system.
“This is not a one-off initiative. Our goal is to embed civic education as a lasting and evolving part of the national curriculum. Success will not just be measured by distribution, but by how confidently students engage with these ideas and understand their role in society,” said Ms Mataiciwa.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between the FEO, the Ministry of Education, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
