The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) and the Online Safety Commission (OSC) today, 04 December 2025 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in protecting Fiji’s electoral processes from online misinformation, disinformation, and cyber abuse.
The three-year agreement establishes a framework for both organisations to work together to monitor digital platforms for harmful content, respond swiftly to online threats, and share expertise on digital safety.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Supervisor of Elections Ms Ana Mataiciwa emphasised the importance of the partnership in building public trust.
“This partnership is about more than our two organisations. It is about building a Fiji where citizens can trust what they read and hear, where people can take part in democracy without fear of being misled, and where our online spaces reflect the respect and honesty that define us as a nation,” Ms Mataiciwa said.
Online Safety Commissioner Mr Filipe Batiwale highlighted the Commission’s commitment to the partnership.
“This is why today’s collaboration is so essential. Both the FEO and the OSC recognise the pressing need to work together to combat online misinformation and disinformation intended with causing harm that can influence or undermine elections specifically the candidates and people associated with elections process. This partnership ensures that our institutions respond not in isolation, but in a coordinated, efficient, and proactive way,” said Commissioner Batiwale.
The MoU establishes a framework for joint action, including monitoring digital platforms for election-related harm, coordinating responses to disinformation, promoting safe online behaviour, and developing procedures to address major online incidents such as coordinated disinformation attacks.
The agreement positions both organisations to work collaboratively in preparation for the General Elections and beyond.
