‘Ara Na Yadra, Omo Yoran, and a Victorious Morning to you All.

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I welcome you to the beautiful shores of Fiji for the Nauru Electoral Commission Professional Development Program. This gathering marks a significant milestone in our united quest to advance and uphold democratic governance across the Pacific region.

First and foremost, I extend a heartfelt welcome to our esteemed colleagues from the Nauru Electoral Commission. Your unwavering dedication to enhancing electoral processes and governance in your homeland is truly inspirational. We are honored to host you and facilitate this transformative program designed to empower you with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in your vital roles.

The Professional Development Program, organized with the invaluable support of the UNDP Pacific Office, is a beacon of our shared vision under the Pacific Cooperation Framework 2023-2027. It signifies our collective commitment to fostering effective governance, transparency, accountability, and the rule of law throughout the Pacific Islands. Together, we strive to strengthen democratic institutions, ensuring we operate with high standards of integrity and professionalism.

In the coming days, we will embark on an intensive journey of learning and collaboration through training sessions, workshops, and peer-to-peer engagements. This program is designed to address the unique challenges we faced as Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs) . We will explore critical areas such as strategic leadership, conflict resolution, stakeholder engagement, ethical standards, and effective electoral management practices.

Elections are the cornerstone of democracy. They are the mechanisms through which the voice of the people is heard, and the direction of our nation is charted. As stewards of this crucial process, our role in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections cannot be overstated.  We must approach this responsibility with unwavering dedication, integrity, and excellence.

We are privileged to have a distinguished group of experts and resource persons here in Fiji our UNDP officials. Their wealth of experience and insights will undoubtedly enrich our discussions, offering invaluable perspectives on best practices in electoral administration.

One of the core objectives of this program is to cultivate a thriving network of electoral professionals through peer-to-peer learning and networking opportunities. By sharing experiences and learning from one another, we can collectively enhance our capacities and build a robust community dedicated to upholding democratic principles and promoting fair and credible elections.

Beyond the formal sessions, this program offers a unique opportunity for cross-learning and the establishment of lasting professional relationships with us, the Fijian Elections Office and future collaboration with other Pacific EMBs. This collaboration and exchange of ideas will elevate the Nauru Electoral Commission and contribute to the overall strengthening of electoral processes across our region.

As we embark on this journey together, I encourage each of you to actively participate, share your insights, and seize the wealth of knowledge and expertise available during this program. Let us work hand in hand to build a more transparent, accountable, and inclusive electoral system that inspires unwavering public trust and confidence.

May this program be the dawn of new opportunities, strengthened capacities, and a renewed commitment to advancing democratic governance in Nauru and throughout the Pacific region.

At this juncture, I wish to express my deepest gratitude to the DATEC as offering their expertise in their two-day Business Management Training and the UNDP Pacific Office for their steadfast support and partnership. I also extend my sincere appreciation to all the resource persons, organizers, and participants whose efforts have made this program possible.

With these words, it is my great honor to officially declare the Nauru Electoral Commission Professional Development Program open and I wish you all a productive, enriching, and inspiring week ahead. May the Lord continue to bless you and keep you. May His face shine upon you and be gracious to you and may he give you peace.

Thank You, Vinaka Vakalevu,
