The Supervisor of Elections, Ms Ana Mataiciwa, today held a briefing with Political Parties representatives on the Voter Registration, Data Cleaning, and Electoral Law Bills.
The briefing included presentations from the Deputy Director of Operations, Mr Rangeet Chand, and the Manager Legal, Mr Mesake Dawai.
In his presentation, Mr Chand emphasised on Voter Registration and Data Cleaning, mentioning that voter registration keeps eligible citizens on the register, while data cleaning keeps every record accurate, current, and legally compliant.
“Voter registration begins with identity and eligibility checks. An eligible citizen submits the prescribed form and supporting information, then an officer confirms identity, eligibility and completeness,” said Mr Chand.
“Then we capture demographic details; photographs and biometrics are entered in the Electronic Voter Registration before the record is quality-checked and registration is confirmed.”
“Our data cleaning process is verified with the Birth, Death, Marriage Office, the Fiji National Provident Fund, the Fiji Correction Service, Department of Immigration, Registration forms and next of kin.”
Mr Chand said data cleaning addresses five distinct record risks: deceased voters, potential duplicates, inmate status, renounced citizenship and registration.
As at 30 June 2026, a total of 723,771 Fijians have been registered in the National Register of Voters.
Meanwhile, Mr Dawai presented on the Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2026, Electoral (Registration of Voters) (Amendment) Bill 2026, and Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding & Disclosures) (Amendment) Bill 2026.
The Supervisor of Elections is expected to hold similar briefings with CSOs and the Media on Friday, 28 August 2026.
